For the third straight summer, the families of more than 300,000 children in Mississippi will have a leaner pantry than they might have otherwise because of a flint-hearted governor.
Tate Reeves, who tends to oppose any welfare that’s not of the corporate variety, has kept this state from participating in SUN Bucks, a federal food stamps program that provides families with an extra $120 grocery allowance for each eligible child when school is out for the summer. To be eligible, the child must qualify for free- or reduced-price meals when school is in session.
That translates, according to Mississippi Today, to about $38 million a summer the state’s low-income families, and the grocery stores at which they shop, are not receiving.
Shame on Reeves.
