Mary Evelyn Stokes, 97, passed away Thursday, July 27, 2023 at Atwood Personal Care Home in Kosciusko. A graveside service was held at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Panama City, FL on Monday, July 31, 2023 at 9:30 AM with burial to follow. No visitation will be held locally. Pallbearers were John Donald Cairncross, Stephen Thomas Waggener, Jr., Marshall Houston Whittemore, Austin Daugherty, Cray Cairncross, and Houston Reid Whittemore. Rev. James Culpepper will officiate. Culpepper Funeral Home in Kosciusko was in charge of arrangements.
She previously worked as a Railroad Clerk for Southern Railroad and retired from Harmony Leland School. She was a charter member of Atlanta Baptist Temple in Atlanta, GA and a member of Williamsville Baptist Church.
Evelyn is survived by her daughters Virginia Diane Stokes (Bo) of Panama City Beach, FL and Judy Lynn Stokes Burrell of Kosciusko, MS; son Henry Foster (Hank) Stokes, III (Sharon) of Panama City Beach, FL; 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents Rufus Cone and Ella Mae Lee Hines; husband Henry Foster Stokes, Jr.; sisters Lila Poole, Florrie Young, and Cornelia Carlisle; and brothers James, Lester, Harold, Hampton, Robert, Edward, Lee Roy, and Earl Hines.
