The 2023 primary election is getting closer.
Attala County Circuit Clerk Lula Thompson recently announced that absentee voting has started. Absentee voting is for anyone who is 65 years or older, has a disability, will be out of town on Election Day or will be at work that day and will be unable to get to the poll. The deadline to vote absentee is at noon on Saturday, Aug. 5.
Dates and time for poll worker training has also been announced.
DEMOCRATIC POLL WORKER TRAINING WILL BE:
• District I – South Central and Williamsville – July 19 at 9 a.m.
• District II – North East, McCool, Liberty Chapel and Berea – July 19 at 1 p.m.
• District III – North West, North Central, Carmack, Possumneck and Hesterville – July 20 at 9 a.m.
• District IV – South West, Newport, Sallis and McAdams – July 20 at 1 p.m.
• District V – East, Providence, Zama, Thompson, Ethel – July 21 at 9 a.m.
REPUBLICAN POLL WORKER TRAINING WILL BE:
• District I – South Central and Williamsville – July 24 at 9 a.m.
• District II – North East, McCool, Liberty Chapel and Berea – July 24 at 9 a.m.
• District III – North West, North Central, Carmack, Possumneck and Hesterville – July 24 at 1 p.m.
• District IV – South West, Newport, Sallis and McAdams – July 25 at 9 a.m.
• District V – East, Providence, Zama, Thompson and Ethel – July 25 at 1 p.m.
The primary election will be held Aug. 8, and the primary runoff is set for Aug. 29. The general election is scheduled for Nov. 7.
While the deadline to register vote in the in the primary was July 10, the deadline to register to vote in the general election is Oct. 30.

County offices that will be on the ballot this year include chancery clerk, circuit clerk, coroner, county attorney, sheriff and tax assessor/collector as well as district county offices of constable, justice court judge, supervisor and districts 2 and 4 election commissioners.
Statewide offices that will be on the ballot this year include governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general, auditor, treasurer, commissioner of insurance and commissioner of agriculture and commerce, and district offices of state senators and representatives, transportation commissioner, public service commissioner and district attorney.
County school board seats will also be on the ballot for the general election. Qualifying for those seats, however, will not begin until August.
