December Murder
The Grenada Police Department is still investigating the events that led to the shooting death of a Grenada man on Dec. 29, 2023.
According to Chief Douglas, officers were dispatched to a shooting call just after 8:30 p.m. in the 1200 block of Mound Street.
“Upon arrival police discovered that a male subject had been shot,” he said. “The victim was transported to UMMC (University of Mississippi Medical Center) in Grenada for treatment.”
The victim, 39-year-old Edwyn Sims of Grenada, later died as a result of the injury sustained in the shooting. According to Chief Douglas, GPD investigators quickly developed possible suspects in the case.
Two suspects, 26-year-old Lakyron Herrod and 22-year-old Tyrese Herrod, both of Grenada, were later arrested and charged with murder in the shooting death of Sims. They were housed at the Grenada County Jail with no bond.
“Police continue the investigation to determine the motive for the shooting,” Chief Douglas concluded.
November Murder
GPD investigators also continue their investigation into an altercation on the evening of Nov. 27, 2023, inside a residence in the 700 block of South Street in Grenada that left a Grenada man dead and another behind bars after shots rang out.
According to initial reports, Chief Douglas said that 26-year-old Johnathan Sanders of Grenada was placed behind bars at the Grenada County Jail on a $250,000 bond after being arrested for the shooting death of 36-year-old Nicolaus Marquis Cole.
At approximately 7:57 p.m., GPD officers responded to the shooting call and discovered that Cole had been shot inside the residence, Chief Douglas said. He was then transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Grenada.
“He was immediately airlifted to another medical center outside of Grenada County for treatment,” Chief Douglas said.
Sanders was arrested, initially charged with aggravated assault and placed behind bars at the Grenada County Jail. The next day, Tuesday, Nov. 28, while GPD investigators continued their probe into the events leading up to the shooting, Cole died as a result of the injuries sustained in the shooting and Sanders’ charges were upgraded to murder.
