Concession stands at Hugh Ellard Park and Northside Park will soon get a makeover.
Bids for work to renovate the concession stands at the two Kosciusko parks were approved at the Jan. 17 Board of Aldermen meeting.
Two buildings will be renovated at Hugh Ellard Park. The park’s A-frame concession stand will get an upgrade. The building was built the same time as the park, which was over 40 years ago.
A smaller building housing restrooms will also be renovated.
“Those restrooms are absolutely horrible,” said Mayor Tim Kyle. “It’s just old plywood in there.”
Additional space will also be added to the restrooms.
There’s an area out front of the building with a pitched roof, and part of the renovation will also include adding a ceiling.
“Nobody can go under there to sit at a picnic table, because it’s full of birds,” said Kyle. “So that will actually be a usable structure” after the renovation work.
The board unanimously approved the bids by J&K Custom Builders for both buildings for the combine total of $112,087.82. J&K Custom Builders had the lowest bids.
The concession stand renovation will be a new project at Northside Park, said Kyle.
The project will include adding all new countertops and sinks, replacing the serving window and counter area, repainting and changing the light fixtures. Work will also be done to improve the building’s storeroom in the back, including adding shelving, painting the floor and adding a cooling unit.
The board unanimously approved the bids by Corvan Greer Construction for $8,950, which was the lowest of two bids.
Also during the meeting, the board approved the bid made be Ramsey Construction for $148,900 for the demolition work at the Strand at the advice of Belinda Stewart Architects, which is leading the renovation project at the Strand.
“Hopefully, this will get us underway on that project,” said Kyle.
