The Attala County Board of Supervisors will take bids on a project to reseal roads during its first board meeting in September.
Attala County was awarded nearly $2.6 million in state aid monies. State aid funding can be used to build bridges or complete reseals or overlays, but it must be done on state aid roads. The reseal plan is a part of state aid project SAP-04(17).
County Engineer Christian Gardner said he got a call from the state to advertise the project and explained that the reseal would cover two to five miles of road depending on the roads selected. Roads in the project include Attala Road 3122 from Highway 35 across Highway 43; Attala Road 2247 from Highway 43 to the industrial park; Attala Road 3034, commonly known as Sale Barn Road, running from Highway 35 to Highway 43; Attala Road 5216, commonly known as Knox Crossing Road, running from Highway 12 to Highway 14 and crossing the Yockanookany River; Attala Road 4167 from Highway 14 North to Highway 12 in McAdams; and Attala Road 5053, otherwise known as Lower Crossing Road, from the city limits of Ethel to Highway 14. Gardner told the supervisors he hopes to see the roads get some base repairs and leveling done by this fall and winter.
This year, Attala County received $2 million in LSBP (local system bridge program) funding. This money can only be spent on bridges, and unlike the state aid monies, LSBP funds cannot be spent on a state aid road; it must be used on all-system roads.
Gardner encouraged the Board of Supervisors to fund a couple of LSBP bridges, and then go ahead and program one or two bridges for projects that the state may fund if additional money is available. In years past, the state has funded shovel-ready jobs with a plan involved that are ready to be fixed.
At this time, the Board of Supervisors are examining bridges in their respective beats that may be eligible for programming.
