The Kosciusko School District developed plans of action to improve and upgrade athletic facilities across the district.
The plans are broken down into three phases and are set to enhance the sports of football, baseball, cheerleading, volleyball, basketball, soccer, powerlifting, tennis, archery, fast-pitch softball, track, and band. These projects were budgeted using revenue from local, intermediate, state, federal, and 16th section sources. Superintendent Billy Ellzey said architects are in the process of making drawings for these improvements.
In Phase 1, there are plans to build a new physical education and health facility at the KHS football practice field. The football field will also be turfed, including painted lines for football and soccer. Renovations and upgrades will also be made to the soccer field house. Air conditioning and heating will be installed in both KHS and KJHS gyms. The baseball team hitting area will be enclosed, and an enclosed hitting area will be built for the softball program behind the home dugout. The old football field house will be renovated to become the new baseball locker room and storage facility. Other Phase 1 improvements include finishing the brick on the softball field dugouts, buying an upgraded pole-vault pit for the track, renovating the storage area for volleyball, basketball, and track, and adding lighting for the band bleachers at the football field.
In Phase 2, the drainage issue at the track — currently rendering it unusable — will be addressed and the track will also be resurfaced. The KHS gym floor will be extended and upgraded and the bleachers will be replaced. A brick project at the baseball and softball facility will be finished, including the concession building and the fieldhouses for softball and baseball. The press box on the football field will be replaced and upgraded, and there will be increased band storage at the field as well. Additional lighting will be added as needed for outdoor athletic fields. New access for band trucks to reach the back side of the band bleachers will be created.
In Phase 3, a bathroom and concession facility will be built at the track, tennis courts will be built, and all scoreboards will be updated.
