From staff reports
A German cyclist who has spent the past five months riding across the United States says one of his favorite stops was the Natchez Trace Parkway in Mississippi.
Christoph Eisele of Munich arrived at the Natchez Trace Visitor Center in Attala County on September 18, the 130th day of his journey. He said he has made about 100 stops along the way, visiting major cities and national parks.
Eisele said he chose to travel by bicycle because it was a nice way to take it all in. He also said he has enjoyed meeting people along the way, who have been "very nice" to him.
Eisele's journey will come to an end on October 16 in Key West, Florida, where he will board a flight back to Germany.
One of Eisele's favorite stops was Yosemite National Park, which he called "the best nature place." He said the whole trip was great, with each place having its own unique beauty.
However, Eisele did note that the weather was challenging at times. He said he had to deal with freezing cold nights when he started his journey in Canada, as well as temperatures over 110 degrees Fahrenheit in the Central Valley of California.
Despite the challenges, Eisele said the trip was "great" and that he learned a lot about himself. He said he realized that he is capable of motivating himself and handling things on his own. He also said he was glad to learn that the stereotypes about America back home in Germany are not accurate.
Eisele has a master's degree in history from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, where he also received his bachelor's degree in history in 2020.
The Natchez Trace in Attala County sees hundreds of visitors from foreign countries each year.
