My mother used to say if something good can come out of a bad situation, then it was not so bad after all. This last malady that has overtaken me has been horrendous, but I can see some positive happenings.
I broke my ankle several years ago and, at the time, our church cooked for us for several weeks before I told them I believed we could make it, so we would take it from there.
The first night we were on our own I told my husband we would just go get some fried chicken and potatoes and we could just open some English peas. He went by KFC and got the food and came home, opened a can of peas and dished up my plate.
The peas were cold, unseasoned, and right out of the can. I didn’t say anything as I knew just this much must have been “taxing” his culinary skills, so I just ate the peas as served.
Several months after this, I explained to him that the peas needed warming with at the least a little pat of butter. He said, “Oh well, I thought they were like pork and beans, just open and eat.”
This time has really been different.
He has learned so many new things I believe he could easily be a “house husband.” He cooks breakfast every morning; the same thing each day, but he cooks it and I eat it. He makes a great sandwich at noon and he is excellent on the grill or picking up food. We are beginning to harvest vegetables from our garden, and he even fried squash last night.
He puts me to bed every night and makes sure I have my meds, fan, water, book, phone, chapstick, and all my paraphernalia before kissing me goodnight.
The only chore he just despises is washing dishes. We have a perfectly good dishwasher, but he refuses to use it. I just do not know why. I kind of think that he does not know how to operate the controls.
He has learned to make up beds, clean up after our Yorkie, buy groceries, clean bathrooms, wash clothes, and even mop the floors.
I was taught by a woman of the “old school,” and that means that for nearly 58 years I have totally taken care of all the household duties and had his supper on the table when he got home in the evenings. This new routine of his is completely different from anything he has ever had to do.
Imagine now a man who can take a business and tell you how to set it up, organize it, and make it profitable — who has done this many times through the years — who now takes a house and make it work as we are accustomed. It is just amazing to me.
I love using a cake mix, adding to, taking away from it, and making a most delicious dessert.
