The Psalmist said, “So teach us to number our days, that we may present to Thee a heart of wisdom” (Psalms 90:10,12).
If we are going to number our days, there are some things we need to remember:
1. Life is short. It is described by James as “…a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away” (James 4:13-17).
2.Death is sure. “…it is appointed for men to die once…” (Hebrews 9:27).
3. Judgment is certain. “…God is now declaring to men that all everywhere should repent, because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom he has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising him for the dead” (Acts17:30-31).
4. Hell awaits the unprepared. “…the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus” (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9).
5. Heaven is for the prepared. “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2)
The reason for numbering our days is that we may present to God a heart of wisdom. Is wisdom a word others would use in describing me? What about you? The wise person will “…fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person” (Ecclesiastes 12:13). If we do not realize how uncertain life is, and that death is sure and judgement is certain, then we are not preparing ourselves for heaven. That means we are not learning to number our days and wisdom is lacking.
Am I, are you, making a difference with our lives? Do you know God? Have you obeyed the gospel of Jesus? To not do so is to not make preparation for that prepared place.
