From press and staff reports
Attala County Deputy Tommy Pender has completed the Certified Investigator Program through the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers Training Academy in Pearl, gaining advanced skills in modern investigative techniques and criminal justice procedures.
The 320-hour course, conducted over eight months with one week of training per month, is designed to equip criminal justice professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to identify perpetrators and gather evidence crucial for securing convictions.
Pender said the most challenging aspect of the program was adapting to the rapid evolution of technology in criminal investigations. The curriculum included computer-based learning and instruction on emerging investigative tools, including cryptocurrency tracking.
"Learning how to track Bitcoin and knowing how to stay on top of it" was particularly demanding, Pender said. He added that many criminals now communicate using emojis and coded language, requiring investigators to develop new skills to decipher messages.
Despite the technical challenges, Pender said the networking opportunities proved most valuable. "I'm a people person," he said, noting that his strength in interviewing was enhanced by connections made with other law enforcement professionals during the training.
"You network with other officers and can bring in experts on technology challenges," Pender said. "I became more technology savvy."
Since completing the program, Pender said he has employed the skills and techniques learned to help the sheriff's office on several matters. The training has provided him with new ideas and methods for investigating crimes, processing scenes and collecting evidence.
The program covers topics including crime scene management, interview and interrogation, surveillance, criminal case management, sexual assaults, cybercrimes, homicide investigations, child abuse and terrorism investigations.
For officers considering the program, Pender emphasized the importance of embracing technological advancement. He advised staying current with digital investigation techniques, particularly cryptocurrency tracking, while leveraging personal strengths and professional networks developed during training.
Pender expressed appreciation to Sheriff Curtis Pope for allowing him to attend the certification program.
According to the training academy, the program is structured to minimize departmental disruption by allowing investigators to continue fulfilling their responsibilities throughout the year while completing their certification.
