The Attala County Board of Supervisors on Monday approved the use of the Attala County Coliseum as a warming shelter during an 11 a.m. special-called meeting held in response to severe winter weather conditions.
The board authorized the shelter as part of the county’s emergency response efforts to protect residents from dangerously cold temperatures forecast for the area.
According to Attala County Emergency Management Director Danny Townsend, the warming shelter will open at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26, at the Attala County Coliseum in Kosciusko. The shelter will close at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
Townsend said the shelter will be staffed by volunteers and will provide a warm, safe place for individuals and families who may be without adequate heat or shelter during the overnight hours.
County officials urged residents who need assistance or who know of someone who may be at risk due to the cold to take advantage of the shelter.
Additional information about shelter operations or other emergency services may be obtained through Attala County Emergency Management.
