The Arts Foundation of Kosciusko is partnering with the Kohler Foundation Inc., based in Kohler, Wisconsin, to preserve and share the artwork and legacy of the unusual artist L.V. Hull.
The Arts Foundation of Kosciusko plans to open the first phase of the project to the public next summer.
Hull (1942-2008) was a self-taught artist who used glue and paint to transform found objects into vibrant works of art. That artwork enlivened her living environment and attracted visitors from around the world to her unique Allen Street home.
L.V. Hull was a self-taught artist who used glue and paint to transform found objects into vibrant works of art. That artwork enlivened her living environment and attracted visitors from around the world to her unique Allen Street home.
Since her death, her home has been vacant, and more than 100 pieces of artwork and hundreds of personal items have been stored in the basement of City Hall under the care of the Friends of L.V. Hull and the city of Kosciusko.
The Arts Foundation of Kosciusko has now acquired property near Hull’s home to help preserve and share her life and legacy. The property is at the intersection of South Huntington Street and Allen Street, and it was once home to Davidson Marble Works and was also a family home. The property will be renovated to provide exhibition, education and event space, as well as potential facilities for an artist-in-residence.
“We are excited for the community to have a place to display the L.V. Hull collection and provide recognition to her artistic work,” said Hollis Cheek, president of the Arts Foundation of Kosciusko.
These efforts were made possible through Kohler’s support and expertise. Kohler is known nationally for its 70-year history preserving art and art environments and supporting educational initiatives. The Kohler team in Wisconsin is preserving and cataloguing the L.V. Hull collection before it is returned to Kosciusko.
In a press release, the Arts Foundation of Kosciusko said it is appreciative of Liesl Testwuide, Beth Wiza, Dan Smith with the Kohler Foundation and Annalise Flynn with SPACES at Kohler for their guidance and assistance in bringing this economic tourism opportunity to Mississippi.
