Residents of Attala County have until April 1 to file for Homestead Exemption, a property tax benefit available to eligible homeowners. First-time applicants must visit the county Tax Assessor’s Office in person to submit their application.
First-Time Filing Requirements
The filing window for homestead exemption benefits runs from January 1 to April 1 each year. Once an application is approved, benefits are automatically renewed annually unless the applicant's status changes.
Changes Requiring a New Application
Homeowners must file a new application if any of the following changes occur:
• Marriage, divorce, separation, or the death of a spouse or joint owner
• Change in property ownership, use, or occupancy
• Acquisition of new property or modification of the property description
• First-time application for individuals 65 years or older or those who are 100% disabled
Additional Exemption Benefits
Individuals who reach 65 years of age or become 100% disabled on or before January 1 of the filing year may qualify for an additional exemption. Those eligible must apply in person at the Tax Assessor’s Office to receive additional tax credits.
For qualifying individuals, homestead exemption benefits may result in full tax exemption on up to 160 acres of land or a property appraised at up to $75,000. Any property exceeding these limits will be taxed on the excess value or acreage.
How to Apply
Residents can visit the Attala County Tax Assessor’s Office before the April 1 deadline to apply or update their exemption status. For more information, homeowners should contact the office directly.
