SUPER 24: Star-Herald elite football team announcedBy AUSTIN BISHOP,
Kosciusko High School led the way with seven athletes on the Star-Herald Super 24 football team, recognizing local athletes for the accomplishments during the 2018 football season.
McAdams had five players named to the team, with Ethel, Central Holmes and French Camp were represented by four players each.
The athletes were nominated by their coaches and chosen by the Star-Herald sports staff, with interim sports editor Austin Bishop making all final decisions. The schools in the Star-Herald coverage area are Kosciusko, Ethel, McAdams, French Camp and Central Holmes.
Here is a breakdown of the 2018 'Super 24' football squad, listed in alphabetical order:
— JOHN BAYNE, Sr. S/RB, McAdams: The 5-foot-10, 185-pounder garnered MHSAA Class 1A All-State honors on the strength of 56 tackles, three interceptions and four fumble recoveries while scoring two defensive touchdowns for the Bulldogs.
— KENDRIOUN BOATMAN, Sr., G/DT, McAdams: The 6-foot-4, 300-pounder was named to the MHSAA 1A All-State Team, recording 82 tackles and four quarterback sacks, while recording 10 pancake blocks on offense.
— KRISTOPHER BROWN, Jr. WR/WB/QB, McAdams: Brown scored 22 touchdowns on 1,068 all-purpose yards and was named MHSAA Class 1A All-State.
— KODY CAUSEY, Sr. ILB/P, Kosciusko: Causey had 55 tackles, with three for a loss and sack. He also picked off a pass, broke up three passes and had two quarterback hurries. He also had 26 punts for a 34.9 yard average, with a long of 57 yards and four being downed inside the 20.
— KENDAL DOTSON, Sr. QB/ATH, Ethel: He hit on 46 of 87 passes for 863 yards and 10 touchdowns, while rushing for 840 yards and seven scores on 157 attempts.
— BRADLEY EDWARDS, Jr., LB, French Camp: He recorded 88 tackles, including five for losses and recovered a fumble for the Panthers.
— HOLMAN EDWARDS, Sr. QB/DB, French Camp: Edwards hit on 81-of-150 passes for 1,111 yards and 12 touchdowns and also carried the ball for 778 yards on 129 attempts. On defense he recorded 25 tackles and picked off four passes.
— DEVONTE' ELLIS, Jr. OLB, Kosciusko: Ellis had 66 tackles, including two for losses, to go with a sack, three quarterback hurries, four pass breakups, a sack and a defensive touchdown.
— JORDEN FLEMING, Sr., QB/S, McAdams: Fleming rushed for 875 yards and 19 touchdowns, while recorded 62 tackles.
— KENDRELL GAMBLE, Sr. S, Kosciusko: Gamble had three pass breakups, three fumble recoveries, four tackles for a loss and 47 total stops for the Whippets.
— ZACH GILMER, Sr. RB/LB, French Camp: He rushed for 591 yards and scored seven touchdowns on 108 carries., while also catching eight passes for 85 yards. On defense he recorded 57 tackles, including 11 for losses.He also picked off a pass and recovered a fumble.
— ANTONIO HARMON, So., WR/FS/KR, Kosciusko: The 6-foot-1, 186-pounder caught 20 passes for 478 yards and six touchdowns, returned two kick-offs for touchdowns, and also scored a touchdown rushing. He also scored four defensive touchdowns while making 42 tackles, causing four fumbles, recovering four fumbles and intercepting a pass.
— WES HUDSON, Sr., TE/DE, Central Holmes: The 6-foot-5, 235-pound senior excelled on both sides of the ball, earning all-conference honors. He recorded 60 tackles and caught a pair of touchdown passes.
— AKEEM IRVING, Sr., MLB/FB/K, Ethel: The 6-foot-2, 225-pounder recorded 71 tackles, including eight for a loss, while recovering three fumbles. He also caught 17 passes for 202 yards and two scores and rushed for an additional 227 yards, while kicking eight extra points.
— WYKEECE JOHNSON, Jr., RB, Central Holmes: The conference Most Valuable Player rushed for 1,250 yards and 17 touchdowns.
— CLAYTON LEATHERS, Sr., DB/LB/WR, French Camp: He led the team in tackles with 89, including five for a loss, while intercepting a pass. He also caught 15 passes for 327 yards and four scores.
— PERCY LEWIS, Jr. DT/OT, McAdams: The Bulldogs' big man recorded 78 tackles, including six quarterback sacks, to go with seven quarterback hurries and two tipped passes. He also executed 11 pancake blocks on offense and was named to the MHSAA Class 1A All-State Team.
— NICHOLAS MALLETT, Sr. DE, Kosciusko: The 6-foot-3 250-pounder had 13 tackles for a loss, including a sack, while recording 56 total tackles and one quarterback hurry.
— ZAVIER MILLER, Jr., RB, Kosciusko: He rushed for 810 yards and seven touchdown on 113 attempts, while also catching 23 passes for 372 yards and three scores. He also returned a kick-off for a touchdown.
— CODY ORNSBY, Sr., C, Ethel: The 6-foot-3, 255-pounder had eight pancake blocks on the season and graded out at 82 percent.
— ADDISON RAY, Sr. OL, Central Holmes: The 6-2, 235-pounder was chosen to play in the MAIS All-Star football game for the Trojans.
— IZIK STEWART, Jr., WR/OLB, Ethel: Stewart caught 26 passes for 422 yards and four scores, while making 43 tackles on defense to go along with three pass deflections. He also blocked a punt for the Tigers.
— NATHAN TAYLOR, Sr. QB, Central Holmes: Taylor accounted for 17 total touchdowns, passing for 900 yards and rushing for 1,000 more. He was an MAIS All-Star.
— DAVONTA TURNER, So., DT, Kosciusko: The 6-foot, 296 pounder amassed 4.5 sacks and a quarterback hurry to go with two tackles for a loss, 66 total stops and a fumble recovery.
