Kosciusko girls soccer coach Greg Cooper feels the United States victory in the Women's World Cup will have a positive influence on the sport at the grassroots level. The U.S. team defeated The Netherlands 2-0 Sunday to repeat as FIFA Women’s World Cup champions.
Three Kosciusko softball teams played in state tournaments recently.
The 11-and-12-year-old team finished second in a tournament at Iuka. The 9-10 team was fourth, also at Iuka and the 7-8 team finished fourth in a tournament at Caledonia.
The Kosciusko boys basketball team wound up the summer program with a game at Forest.
“We played a great Quitman team — well coached and very athletic,” said Kosciusko coach Eleazarus Greenleaf. ”It was a real battle. We ended up coming back to win the game.”
Ten members of the Kosciusko Cardinals youth football team attended the Genard Avery Youth Football Camp at the end of June.
The Kosciusko girls basketball team had a busy summer, a very busy summer. The Lady Whippets went to four camps and played 31 games, the final ones last Thursday.
Two Kosciusko Dixie Youth baseball teams will play for state championships.
The Kosciusko athletic program will begin the new school year with a number of different faces in new roles, as a handful of coaches have been added to the staff.
Local 6U Dixie Youth Baseball players recently competed in and won their District Championship against Philadelphia this past weekend. Scores for both games were an impressive 17-2 and 14-7.
Aidan Howard, 11, participated in MLB Pitch Hit Run competitions from district to sectional and then advanced to the Houston Astros Team Championship Round at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, during the past few months.
