It's the Mississippi Association of Coaches (MAC) annual convention week. A time for high school coaches from throughout the state to converge on the Jackson area to soak up knowledge and renew friendships.
The Dixie Youth state baseball tournament for 11 and 12 year olds at Kosciusko’s Hugh Ellard Park will begin Friday after a one-week delay due to heavy rain from Tropical Storm Barry that hit the area last weekend.
Thunder, a Kosciusko age 10 and under baseball team, won a USSSA (United States Specialty Sports Association) championship last week. The team advanced to the World Series played in Orange Beach, Alabama, after winning the state championship in Brandon.
Kosciusko girls soccer coach Greg Cooper feels the United States victory in the Women's World Cup will have a positive influence on the sport at the grassroots level. The U.S. team defeated The Netherlands 2-0 Sunday to repeat as FIFA Women’s World Cup champions.
Three Kosciusko softball teams played in state tournaments recently.
The 11-and-12-year-old team finished second in a tournament at Iuka. The 9-10 team was fourth, also at Iuka and the 7-8 team finished fourth in a tournament at Caledonia.
The Kosciusko boys basketball team wound up the summer program with a game at Forest.
“We played a great Quitman team — well coached and very athletic,” said Kosciusko coach Eleazarus Greenleaf. ”It was a real battle. We ended up coming back to win the game.”
The Kosciusko girls basketball team had a busy summer, a very busy summer. The Lady Whippets went to four camps and played 31 games, the final ones last Thursday.
