Prep spring training winding down

Several area high school football teams will be testing to see just how ripe the fruits of their labor have been with spring games and jamborees on Thursday and Friday.

Kosciusko High School, which held a public scrimmage last Friday, will play host to Quitman this Friday in Kosy’s annual spring game, while French Camp, McAdams, Durant, Ethel and Weir will all participate in jamborees on Thursday.

First-year Kosy head coach Trey Rolison said you could see how nervous his squad was to begin last week’s scrimmage, but after reviewing the videotape he said he was pleased with how far the Whippets had come in such a short time.

“After they got loose, they got going a little bit,” Rolison said. “All in all, it wasn’t too bad. Always as a head coach you would like for it to be better.”

He said the response from the fans in attendance to his team’s one-back spread offense set was overall positive.

“Everybody thought they were going to like it,” he said. “It was exciting. They were not used to that fast-paced of play.”

He said the No. 1 defense pretty much dominated, as was expected, but also pointed out that the offense will get better and better as they become more familiar with the offense.

The Whippets will get another chance to show what they have learned at 7 p.m. on Friday when the Panthers of QHS pay a visit. The junior varsity teams will play at 5:30 p.m.

McAdams will be taking part in a jamboree at Sebastopol on Thursday, while French Camp will be hosting Montgomery County in a spring game at 6 p.m.

Thursday’s jamboree at Weir will feature Weir, Ethel, Durant, Noxapater, J.Z. George and West Oktibbeha. The action begins at 4 p.m. with new games beginning every 40 minutes. The action is expected to conclude around 8 p.m.

“We are looking for a big crowd, but a lot of it depends on the weather right now,” said Weir head coach Jim Wood. “They are calling for a boat load of rain.”

The concession stands will be open and fans will be charged an admission of $5.

There will be plenty for those paying fans to see, as two games will be played at the same time on the same field. There will be a game played on each side of the 50-yard line.

Facing off at 4 p.m. with be Durant and West Oktibbeha and Noxapater and J.Z. George. The 4:40 schedule has Weir taking the field to play Noxapater and Durant and Ethel squaring off.

At 5:20 Weir plays J.Z. George and Ethel tackles West Oktibbeha while at 6 p.m. Durant and Noxapater play and West Oktibbeha meets J.Z. George.

The 6:40 contests have Weir facing Ethel and Noxapater taking on West Oktibbeha, while at 7:20 Ethel tangles with J.Z. George.

The most anticipated match up of the night has Weir and Durant meeting at 7:20 p.m.
