Bar owners seek extension for sale of beer in County

By Leslie N. Dees

The Attala County Board of Supervisors is looking into what can be done to amend the “beer ordinance” in the county.

During their Monday meeting, Ted’s Place owners, Ted and Hope Horton, asked the board to extend the sale of beer in the county from midnight to 1 a.m.

Ted said the establishment, which is located behind Horne’s Grocery in Sallis, has not had any run-ins with law enforcement in the past and is a drug-free environment.

He said he was seeking the extension to keep more money in Attala County.

The board asked their attorney Scott Pickle to research the ordinance before they could make a decision.

Attala County has about 10 clubs or bars operating in the county.

Zea speaks

Kosciusko-Attala Development Corporation President Steve Zea addressed the supervisors on a few items.

He told them that Holmes Community College President Glenn Boyce would be in Washington, D.C. during their planned February trip.

Zea said Boyce would be available for the reception that Attala, Winston and Choctaw Counties are holding in the Capitol for legislators.

“I think it would be a positive thing,” Zea said.

He added that Boyce would be able to convey their interest in expanding HCC’s presence in Attala County.

Zea also suggested setting up a luncheon with State legislators in Jackson to help build relationships with the area leaders.

The board approved the following:

– Delete bridge project on Attala County Road 4204 due to lack of funding at the request of District 4 Supervisor Kary Ellington.

– Utility agreement with Sallis Water Association.

– School bus turn around for Sarah Johnson.

– Rose business Equipment yearly copy machine lease for Chancery Court and Youth Court.

– General agreement with the Natchez Trace and the Attala County Fire Department about protocol, when fighting fires.

– Final real and personal property rolls.

– Bid from Sanders and Associates for reappraisal and mapping.

– Inventory policy
