ONLINE UPDATE: City tackles unclean properties

By Leslie N. Dees

Kosciusko Mayor Jimmy Cockroft and Board of Aldermen heard from a concerned property owner during the Tuesday night meeting.

Bob Pope, who owns the 102 Pope Street with his sister, addressed the board about dead trees in a nearby property.

“We are concerned the trees are falling on our storage building and the house,” Pope, who lives 600 miles away, said.

Pope said they have tried to work with property owner Jimmy Patterson over the years with no success.

City engineer Dewitt Adcock along with Pope meet with Patterson before that meeting.

Adcock said Patterson had hired a logging company to cut the trees down.

Adcock added that the Patterson is also moving the houses off his property.

The board agreed to keep a watch on the progress and keep Pope informed.

“I would like to know when it’s going to be done,” Pope said. “I surely appreciate it.”

The aldermen took action on several unclean properties on Mitchell Street. Estes property, which is a severely burned home, will be torn down along with several properties belonging to the John Mitchell Estate. Mitchell’s daughter had been contacted by certified letter.

They extended the public hearings on Robbie Black’s West Jefferson Street property and the Dodd Grayson Estate properties on Mitchell Street until Dec. 16.

The board approved the following:

– Accept $1,399 donations for the fund set up to purchase a K-9 for the Kosciusko Police Department. The funds came from a gasoline raffle and several individuals.

– To hire Maurice Hawthorne as a KPD officer.

– Final payment to Delta Constructors in the amount of $88,668.45 for the sewer relocation on Highway 43.

– Claims docket
