The Kosciusko Mayor and Board of Aldermen approved the hiring of Jamie Wilkinson at the Tuesday, Nov. 17, meeting with Alderman Henry Daniel voting against the hire.
Daniel said he wished a minority had been in the mix due to the racial makeup of those going through the court system.
Alderman Robert Ellis cited that Wilkinson was a minority being that she is a female.
Daniel said there have been several to leave that position over his years as alderman.
This is not the first time Daniel has voted against a new hire. He was against the hiring of City Clerk Hart Pettit.
Wilkinson will start on Nov. 30.
The alderman also voted to hire Darren Fleming as a police officer to replace Joe Fulton and he was expected to start two weeks after his approval. He is already a sworn officer.
The board approved the following:
– Minutes from the Oct. 20 and Nov. 3 board meetings
– Pay Integrated Construction $10,876.50 for work done at the airport
– Advertise for annual bid as well as depository bids.
– Remove fixed assets
– Advertise in the Clarion-Ledger, according to Mississippi Department of Transportation requirements, for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for roadwork on Love Road.
– Quote for fencing from Edward and Son Fence Co. for $4,985. The fencing will be used at the Waste Water Department.
– Holiday schedule for city employees
– Re-appoint Stephen Cheek to the Kosciusko Preservation Commission.
– Apply for the Energy and Efficient Community Block Grant. The city would like to get energy audits on the Kosciusko Police Department and Parks and Recreation Office.

The board then went into executive session to discuss a real estate matter and personnel matter.
