Ellington headed to Washington, D.C., for funds

District 4 Supervisor Kary Ellington was granted permission to travel to Washington, D.C. to meet with Sen. Thad Cochran in November by the Attala County Board of Supervisors Monday.

Ellington said he was going to talk with Cochran about $650,000 earmarked funds that could be used for the Sallis Volunteer Fire Department and Training Center.

“I’m just wondering if you can’t kill two birds with one stone in February,” District 2 Supervisor Charles Fancher said. A delegation of both city and county officials are planning to make their annual trip in early 2010 to meet with various federal agencies and officials.

Ellington said he didn’t want to miss out on this opportunity for the county and needed to act now.

None of the supervisors objected to the travel.

Board of Supervisors President Eddie Womble signed papers closing out the Town of Ethel paving project. The project paved several roads in the small community due to a federal appropriation and other grants.

County engineer Christian Gardner said there is some money left over and Mayor Ophelia Mitchell has applied for other grants to aid in the funding of paving additional Ethel roads.

The board approved the following:

–Apply to the State Tax Commission to get the one mil. out of escrow. This is standard end of the year fiscal procedure.

–Claims docket

–Payments to Gardner Engineering in the amounts of $6,582.11 and $28,210.04 for work completed.

–Destruction of old vehicle tax per the request of the tax collector.

–Pay Attala Glass $160 for damages to a vehicle.

–Payment to Holt’s Body Shop for $733.70 for vehicle repair.

–Travel for required training for Justice Court employees in Choctaw on November 12-13.

–First quarter budget for the Attala County Sheriff’s Department and Tax Collector.

–Lease on a tractor for District 5 at the bank with the lowest interest rate.
