Men nabbed hours after robbery

By Leslie N. Dees

Hours after armed robbery was committed, Attala County Sheriff’s Department got their men.

Terry Melton Jr., 17, and Kevin Hansford, 22, have been charged with the armed robbery of Crossroads Grocery in Williamsville and possession of crack cocaine on Friday.

Sheriff William Lee said a male in a white shirt wearing a mask entered the store and demanded money from owner Johnny Dean at knifepoint.

The pair fled from the scene in a red JEEP Cherokee with $150. The vehicle was tracked to the home of Terry Melton Sr. of the Zama community.

Lee along with deputies Tim Nail, Paul Platt, Randy Blakely and Terry Ray watched the house for several hours before Melton Jr. and Hansford returned.

Hansford received five years probation for the August burglary of Sonic Drive-In during the September Circuit Court term.

Two arrested at Mexican bar

Deputy Silento McMorris arrested Pedro Morua and Richardo Venancio for assault at the Mexican Bar on Highway 43 North after a call was dispatched about a fight in progress on Saturday.

Lee said one of the men’s hands was badly cut.

Breaking and entering

Steve Hicks reported someone had broken into his home on Attala County Road 1010 on Thursday, Oct. 2. Items taken include an air compressor, 50 feet of air hose, a socket set and two Black and Decker saws.

In a separate incident on Saturday, Joyce Staggs reported her ex-husband had broken a window at her residence on Attala County Road 3024 and taken a carton of cigarettes. Lee said no charges had been filed.

Another breaking and entering call was brought to the attention of the ACSD by Jean Golden on Friday.

Golden found pry marks on her front door but after going through the house, they found nothing was taken.
