Court leftovers: Love’s trial February 1

Barry Love, 23, of Kosciusko, will go to trial Feb. 1 for the November shooting at Hill Brothers Logging Shop on Highway 19 North, according to court documents.

Love has been charged with capital murder and two counts of aggravated assault.

According to witness accounts, three black males attempted to rob the shop and began to shoot inside the building.

Three others were charged with the same counts in the violent act.

Robert Landfair, 27, of Durant, pleaded guilty in Attala County Circuit Court in September to accessory after the fact to commit robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. He will serve 10 years in prison.

Demetrius Roberson, 27, and Justin James, 22, both of Durant, are still awaiting trial dates.

When the ACSD arrived on the scene, Jesse Earl Hill, 52, was found dead at the scene. Hill received a gunshot wound to the chest.

Donnie Elmore, 56, was shot in the leg and transported to University Medical Center in Jackson and Jimmy Cook, 42, was grazed by a bullet on his side.



Brown sentenced

Michael J. Brown entered a guilty plea to aggravated assault under a plea agreement with District Attorney Doug Evans’ office.

He will serve 10 years in prison with five years probation. The second charge of kidnapping was dropped.

Brown was charged with aggravated assault and kidnapping on Nov. 28.

Clarice Patrick, who had ended a long term relationship with Brown, was taken at gunpoint by him at Ethel High School, when she tried to leave in her vehicle.

The indictment states that Brown struck the victim with his fists and a pistol, causing her to break her finger.



No trial date

William Austin Branch, who has been charged with the April murder of Jacob Simmons, has not been assigned a trial date.

The Attala County Sheriff's Department found Simmons lying in a pasture and shot in the head. The pasture is located on Attala County Road 4163 off of Highway 14 West near the Zemuly community.



Other pleas

–Steve Harrington, malicious mischief, two years with three years post-release supervision. He was originally charged with burglary of a building.

–Kendrick Carter, misdemeanor shoplifting, six month suspended sentence. He was originally charged with a six-month suspended sentence.
