Attala County School Board get closer to building projects

By Leslie N. Dees

The Attala County School Board is one step closer to constructing buildings on school grounds.

The board voted to hire architect Billy Wintzel at a seven percent fee and to begin the soil testing, structural drawings and the bidding process on three projects – Ethel High School cafeteria and football field house and the McAdams High School Band Hall.

These three projects will cost the district an estimated $104,000.

The district has applied for Federal Stimulus money to aid in the process. All board members were in favor of the construction. However, board member Mack Willie Clark felt that McAdams was being “snuffed” by the softball field being put on the back burner.

“That’s the way it goes,” he said.

Superintendent Larry Stevens said the softball field will not need as much work as the other projects. He added that once the houses on McAdams campus were removed, the dirt would be moved from there to the softball field to save money on the project.

There is a contract being drawn up for the purchase of these homes.

Getting out timber

Property owner W.M. Blaine went before the board to ask for an easement to get his timber out.

Blaine said he owns timber land surrounding Greenlee Elementary School and the pines need to be thinned out.

Previously, he has gone through a nearby hay field. The current landowner will not allow him to do so.

The board agreed to work with Blaine.

The board approved the following:

–Credit Recovery Payment of $280 to Buffy Rone

–Tammy Davis, Jamie Wilkinson and Nancy Langford as substitutes.

–Activities and club accounts and travel

–Bus easements for Danny Doty, Evon Sallis, Jamie Wilkinson, Dennyette Ferguson and Minnie Clark.

–Disposal of equipment from fixed assets.

–Financial – claims and sole source purchases.

–Field trips for Greenlee, Long Creek and McAdams High School

–Reject bids on surplus school buses

–Easement for Texas Eastern

–Amend the 2008-2009 budget – re-classify funds

– Minutes from the September meeting.

–Change the date of the November meeting to Nov. 4 due to a training conflict with board members.
