County schools to charge fee for out-of-district students

By Nancy Green

The Attala County School Board accepted several students from other districts and voted to begin charging tuition for those transferring. Following discussion and comparison of rates charged in other districts, the board voted to charge $800 for each student and $400 for each additional student in a family.

The board accepted the following returning students: Hayden Hulett, Nico Hamblin, Dalton Proctor, Zach Harper and Cameron Bennett.

Kaley and Bradley Edwards were released from the school district to attend French Camp Elementary.

In personnel matters, resignations were accepted from longtime McAdams coach Wilson Jackson, and from Justin McDaniel and Gina Guess. Jackson is retiring; McDaniel and Guess are taking other positions.

New teachers approved were: Mrs. Jackie Sandifer, assistant principal at McAdams High School; Kimberly Spencer, elementary teacher at Greenlee; Marketta Roby, physical education at Long Creek; Karla Summers, gifted teacher; Logan Cheek, Career Discovery at McAdams and Ethel; and Carolyn Corey, Biology at McAdams.

Approvals were made for substitute teachers, the student handbook and athletic schedules. All coaching supplements remained the same with the exception of the baseball and softball coaches. They will receive $1,000 incentive for cutting their fields during the summer months.

Several 16th Section bids were approved along with authorization of thinning as recommended by the Forestry Service. Sixteenth section bid approvals are now contingent upon approval from the Secretary of State’s office, board members were told.

Those awarded bids were Willie Roland, 80 acres at $12.50 each; Top Attala, 212 acres at $6.07 each; Hollis Colton Jr., 54 acres at $6 each; 440 acres, Old 12 Hunting Club at $6 each; Tommy Prewitt, 303 acres at $6 each; James Fancher, 91 acres at $6 each; and Steven Tiller at $7.96 each.

Bus easements were approved at the residences of Arthur Brown, Ellen Alston, James Dotson, James Mayhew and Thelma Townsend.

Bids submitted on propane gas were rejected and board members voted to readvertise for bids on prices per gallon above cost.
