Credit Recovery a big success in first year at Kosciusko

The first run of Kosciusko High School’s Credit Recovery Program boasts a big success with a 100 percent pass rate.

KHS Principal Johnathan Carnes says the program had a “good turnout,” with 32 students enrolled. Courses offered included English I, Pre-Algebra, Science Skills and Reasoning, Geometry and Transitions to Algebra.

Students are enrolled from two to four weeks in a course in order to regain credit for a class that they might have failed during the regular semesters.

“This (program) keeps some students from having to drive to other districts (for summer school),” Carnes elaborated, “All of the students have met the objectives.”

The courses are computer-based with teachers on hand to guide students through the curriculum. Other school districts with a CRP formulate the program at their discretion, some districts simply use a facilitator instead of an actual teacher.

With this being the CRP’s first year, there are still some “bugs” to work out.

Registration started for Biology I on July 21, 8 to 9 a.m. with classes starting at 9, the fee is $150 per student.

According to the Mississippi Department of Education’s Web site the credit recovery program can be an effective way of helping students get back on track toward graduation in a more timely fashion, and perhaps encourage students to stay in school.
