99th CMF features award-winning Nash Street, more

It’s just about that time of year! This year the 99th Central Mississippi Fair will feature everyone’s favorite events plus a few new additions. The fair gets underway Wednesday, Aug.6, and ends on Saturday, Aug. 9.

Musical entertainment

Lots of music can be heard on Thursday, Aug. 7, as the first Battle of the Bands, sponsored by Breezy 101, is held. The winner of the competition will be the opening act for bluegrass favorite Nash Street on Friday, Aug. 8.

A favorite to local residents, Nash Street, named for the street in Starkville where they practiced and its catchy sound, is made up of Daniel Hare, bass; Hannah Melby, fiddle; Caroline Melby, mandolin; Jason Graham, guitar; and Clay Lazon, lead guitar.

A recent feather in their cap was being named the “Best New Act in Country Music” at the 26th Annual Colgate Country Showdown in January.

What CMF would be complete without the Carthage Jubilees?

The gospel group is considered a fair favorite and has been performing there over the last several years.

Entertainment is free with admission to the fair.

Fairest of the Fair

The annual pageant for local gals ages 0 months to 18 years is set for Saturday, Aug. 8, with a winner in each age category, at Attala County Coliseum. Starting time is at 6:30 p.m.

Judging is based on attractiveness, poise and personality and contestants need to be dressed in their Sunday best.

Children under four will be escorted by a parent or guardian on stage.

On July 31, there is a mandatory practice at the ACC and it is also the last day to register. There is a $15 entry fee.

Applications for the pageant can be found at Kosciusko Attala Development Corporation.

Corporate Sports Challenge

All local businesses are urged to participate in the challenge for bragging rights on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 7 p.m. at the fairgrounds field.

The KADC are looking for teams consisting of four men and four women with two alternates to compete in the Water Balloon Bounce, Outlandish Relay, Jumping Rope Race and Egg Toss.

Team entry fee is $150 and the deadline to apply is Thursday, July 24. This event is made possible by Ivey Mechanical and Dickerson Petroleum.

Exhibits

Registration for exhibits begins Monday, Aug. 4, at 3 p.m. at the ACC for the art, photography, home and youth divisions as well as fin, horn and feather show.

Judging is all day Tuesday, Aug. 5.

On Wednesday, Aug. 6, the perishable exhibit registration beings for the flower and vegetable show.

Winners will be announced on Thursday, Aug. 7.
