Saturday Morning Sports Ramblings

Durant High School has added some experience to its football coaching staff with the hiring of Bobby Bowman last week.

Bowman will take over defensive coordinator duties on coach Ashley Kuhn's staff. Bowman has 31 years of experience, most recently as head coach at Noxapater High School.

"I'm really pleased," Kuhn said. "He's a good coach that has a lot of experience. It will be a big addition for us."

Bowman replaces Jeremiah. Brassell, who took the job as defensive coordinator for Clarksdale High School.

GILMORE TO PLAY

Despite rumors to the contrary, McAdams High School rising senior Kierra Gilmore said she will play in the MAC Basketball All-Star Game set for Saturday, July 11 at 1 p.m. at A.E. Wood Coliseum on the campus of Mississippi College.

Gilmore said she has been working out recently and feels like her knee will be ready to go.

"I'm definitely playing," she said on Friday night. She will report for the All-Star game on Thursday and will be a member of the South team.

The boys game is set for 3 p.m. Both all-star games are for rising seniors.

HARD TO BELIEVE, BUT BRAVES ARE IN HUNT

Thanks as much to a struggling batch of teams in the NL East as it is their own prowess, the Atlanta Braves are in the thick of the pennant race as the All-Star break draws near.

Atlanta is currently on a five-game winning streak and with a 39-40 record is tied for third place in the NL East with the New York Mets, just two games out of first place.

Philadelphia, who was swept by Atlanta earlier this week, is in first with a 40-37 record just one game ahead of 41-40 Florida.

The Braves play the Mets today and Sunday.
