Transfer of a principal and several resignations were accepted at Monday night’s meeting of the Attala County School Board.
Brian Weaver, principal at McAdams High School for the past four years, is transferring to Greenlee Elementary School as principal, upon the recommendation of Supt. Larry Stevens. Rusty McKnight, who has served two years as Greenlee principal, resigned to accept the principal position at French Camp Academy.
Weaver, who was in a teaching position at McAdams before becoming principal, said he respects Stevens’ decision just as he respected him when he was a student and Stevens his principal.
Resignations
Resignations were accepted from Long Creek Elementary School Arnold Harris who is going to the Holmes County School District as assistant superintendent. Resignations were also accepted from Melissa Collins and Tami McKnight, first grade teachers at Greenlee Elementary. Amy Price was hired as medical technology instructor at the Vo-Tech Center, and Willie Mallett was named to the McAdams cafeteria staff.
School programs
Chuck Poer, with Bailey Education Group in New Albany, addressed the board on assessment, planning and implementation of programs in the schools. The firm is working with administrators and teachers to help them utilize all available data to determine the current status of the schools and to develop a plan of implementation.
“You have things in place and there are challenges for the district,” Poer said. He talked about raising the level of implementation; cited reading as a big issue all over the state; using content people to assist teachers; and use of data in the district to monitor progress and make adjustments when needed.
The board gave its approval for the Ethel Band to travel to Six Flags over Georgia in Atlanta, following a request made by Lisa Odom with the Ethel Band Boosters.
Request for release
Angelia Mann asked for a release of her daughter from the district to continue attending Weir School, but was told by board members that a non-release of students policy is in effect. The family lives in Attala County, three miles from Weir.
A grading system was adopted for grades 1-6 with homework-daily grades counting 25 percent of a student’s grade and tests administered throughout the period counting 75 percent.
In grades 7-12 regular tests will count 50 percent, homework-daily grades 25 percent and nine-week tests, 25 percent.
The board gave its approval to increase the number of credits required for graduation from 21 to 24.
16th section
In 16th section matters, the board approved sending letters of intent to cancel leases to William James Fancher and Multonough Springs Hunting Club with June 15 the deadline for payment. Noel Covington’s bid of $6.10 per acre on 80 acres was accepted and Mike Thrasher’s bid of $8.10 per acre on 130 acres. H.A. Dickerson, former leaseholder on the 130 acres, will have the right to match the bid.
Approval was granted to purchase a Canon image runner copier for Long Creek Elementary at a cost of $10,000. The following single source purchases were approved: Perma Bound—Library Books, $20,512.98 grant for Greenlee library; Scholastic—Read 180 Reading Program for grades 6-8, $78,365; Achieve 3000 Program for grades 2-8, $32,600.70. No action was taken on Destiny Resource Management Solutions-Library Automation at a cost of $38,941.69.
Merchants & Farmers Bank’s depository bid of three years at an interest rate of 2.73 percent was accepted.
