Mental evaluation sought for defendants

By Leslie N. Dees

Judge Joseph Loper issued two motions for mental evaluations and treatment for Michael D. Harmon and Michael A. Lewis during Attala County Circuit Court Monday.

Harmon, 31, has been charged with murder in the shooting death of his uncle, Johnny D. Winters, and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon in December.

Harmon, who was out on parole after serving time for a drive-by shooting at the time of the murder, is currently being treated for psychiatric disorders.

In a separate case, Lewis has been charged with burglary of a building other than a dwelling, automobile burglary and grand larceny.

Lewis was arrested for the theft of the two golf carts from the Redbud Springs Golf and Country Club, automobile burglary on Fairground Street and some burglaries in the county in December.

According to court documents, Lewis is being treated for anxiety, depression and impulse control disorder.

Both Lewis and Harmon will be sent to Mississippi State Hospital at Whitfield to be evaluated.

Those entering guilty pleas Monday were:

– Fred B. Miller, burglary of a building other than a dwelling; two years to serve; five years post-release supervision.

– Billy Ray Horne; transfer of 20 doses of Lorcet; five years to serve; five years post-release supervision.
