Holmes County man gets 10 years for grand larceny

By Leslie N. Dees

Dewayne Price, 24, of Holmes County, was found guilty by a jury and sentenced to 10 years in prison on the charge of grand larceny on Tuesday, March 18, in Attala County Circuit Court.

Price was arrested by the Attala County Sheriff’s Department in July for his role in stealing a green 2006 Kawasaki Bayou 250 and a red 1999 Honda 300 TRX 4X4.

Cordarron Buchanan, a co-defendant who was sentenced to five year supervised probation for his participation, testified during the trial.

Buchanan said he, David Holmes and Price went to steal the four-wheelers.

Using his truck and trailer, Buchanan said they all cut through the fence, took the four-wheelers and loaded them up.

Holmes, a relative of Price, said Price went with them but didn’t leave the truck on the night the four-wheelers were stolen.

Price’s brothers, Eric and Curtis, testified that they saw him with a green four-wheeler but thought it belonged to their cousin’s boyfriend.

Eric said Price was asked to purchase one of four-wheelers the night it was taken.

Attala County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Randy Blakely read parts of Price’s statement during his testimony.

In the statement, Price said he was talking to his girlfriend on the phone when a truck with a trailer pulled up.

Price said he was asked to purchase one of the four-wheelers on the trailer, he said no according to the report. Later, Price said he found the four-wheelers in the woods near his home.

The defense called Price’s girlfriend, who testified that she and Price had been talking on the phone for several hours the night the ATVs were taken.

Price did not testify during the trial.

The jury, which consisted of four black men, one black woman, four white women and three white men, deliberated for less than an hour.
