Newell speaks to board about B&G Club

By Leslie N. Dees

The Oprah Winfrey Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year Melanie Newell spoke about community support for the club to the Attala County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday morning.

Newell, who attends McAdams High School, said without community support through donating their time and money the club can be everything that it needs to be – A positive place for children.

Newell, who has attended the club since 2001, said there are many activities and organizations within the club that help children grow into young adults.

She added that club members can become active in sports, receive a snack and hot meal each day and get help with their homework.

The board approved the following:

– Sixteenth Section lease release, pending board attorney Scott Pickle reviewing the documents.

– School bus turnarounds for Jacinto Gibson, Junior Mitchell and Marylyn Wells.

– Payment to Gardner Engineering payment for annual bridge inspection.

– Advertise for bids for roadwork materials, a used wheel loader, used truck, and two used tractors.
