Horton hired as paper’s news editor

From staff reports

The Star-Herald recently added a new member to its news family. Luke Horton has accepted the position of news editor here at the paper.

Horton is a graduate of Mississippi State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with an emphasis in journalism.

Horton and his family have relocated to Kosciusko from Houston, Texas where the 24-year-old was self-employed as a portrait and wedding photographer.

“It’s going to be a big change moving from a city the size of Houston, but I'm looking forward to readjusting to small-town life,” Horton said.

Horton is no stranger to small-town life. He is originally from Decatur, a small town southeast of Kosciusko with a population of approximately 1,500 residents.

Horton and his wife Lauren, who is from Houston, have an 8-month-old son, Ethan.

“My wife are I are hoping to quickly become a part of the community,” Horton said. “Everyone has been so nice to us and we feel at home here in Kosciusko.”

Besides his experience as a photographer, Horton has also worked as a Children’s Protective Services caseworker and as a missionary in South Africa.

Horton’s duties will include reporting and photography for news, sports and features.

“We are very happy to welcome Luke and his family to our community and to our staff,” Star-Herald Publisher/Editor Mark Thornton said. “They are really great folks, and I know they will fit right in.

“It will probably benefit the paper and our readers to have an outsider’s input in deciding what goes in the paper.”
