Dec. 24, 1959

Ray Mikell, representative-elect from Attala County who will assume office Jan. 5, in a statement released to The Star-Herald says that he will introduce an amendment to the Rules of the House as soon as possible after the Mississippi House of Representatives convenes in regular session in 1960. The proposed change would make the Rules Committee composed of the Speaker and two Representatives from each congressional district who shall be elected by the members of the House from their respective districts to total 13.

The “Aiken Boys” gathered at their 30th anniversary reunion of the 1929 state championship team. They were James Land, Ralph McCool, Bill Davis, Pete Stonestreet, Sam Sims, Hilliard Jordan, Billy McMillan, W. E. Turner, Robert Hardison, C.C. Thompson, Ralph Lane, Doty Jackson, Bud Stonestreet, Allen Tyler, Coach Aiken, Allen Roby, Herman Smith, Garrie Burdette, Ralph Gober, James Pettit, Dr. Sammy Joe Brewer, Sam Power, David E. Crawley Jr., Frederick Brewer, Amos Allen, Carlton Hull, Harry Peeler, Lloyd Owen, Robert A. Ward, Dr. C.A. Jackson, Henry Power, W.C. Williams, Earl Guyton, Walter V. Davis, O.K. Power, Hugh Potts, and Charles Conner.

Kosciusko Garden Club and the Little Garden Club of Kosciusko have just brought to completion a project which will be of interest to the entire community. The two clubs formulated plans for the beautification of several highways leading into Kosciusko. Highways planted were one mile on Highway 35 toward Carmack, one mile on 35 north of town toward Vaiden and almost a mile on 12 toward Durant. Numerous pyracantha, Magnolias, crepe myrtle, crab apples and redbud trees were purchased for this purpose.

SP4 Kelly B. Hutchison of Sallis is performing duties as administrative record clerk in the military personnel section of Headquarters 1st Battle Group, 19th Infantry with U.S. forces in Germany. He is the on of Mrs. Burt K. Hutchison and he late Mr. Hutchison.

Mary Ryn Davidson of Kosciusko, Lucy Simmons Rushing of Kosciusko and Gail Weaver of West, students at Mississippi College, have been named to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.



Dec. 25, 1984

Someone apparently went Christmas shopping after hours at McAdams Grocery Friday night. Sheriff’s officers said a burglar broke out front door glass at the business and reached into the store to take a man’s watch, woman’s watch and necklace from a display stand.

The Attala County Library was a hub of activity last Thursday morning as packages, vans and passenger cars rolled in and carried out a steady stream of Christmas cheer. By mid afternoon the last of 240 boxes of food were on their way to needy families across Attala County as the 1984 edition of the Kosciusko Lions Club’s Christmas basket program came to a close.

The 1984 fall semester marks the 64th anniversary of Mississippi State University’s Famous Maroon Band. This year’s Famous Maroon Band has around 270 members and is under the direction of Dr. Kent Sills, a Kosciusko native. Members include Nathan Prewitt of Pickens, Keely Foster of Kosciusko, Michael Moore of McCool, Laschelle Jones of Carthage, Curtis Dickens and Joycelyn Turnbo, both of Kosciusko.

Personnel of Sta-Home Health Care prepared fruit baskets for the agency’s 96 patients. Participating in the project are Renee Freeny, Debbie Veazey, Earline Payne, Minnie Summers, Winnifred Boyd, Charlotte Clark, Sherby Barksdale, Janie Grantham, Suzanne Summers and Sandi Munn.

Members of he Kosciusko Chapter, Children of he American Revolution, were present at the chapter’s organizational meeting held at the Attala County Library on Dec. 13. They are Leigh Ann Stork, president; Amy Stork, treasurer; Audra Love, recording secretary; Ginny Eaton, chaplain, Elizabeth Weaver, Renee Dorrill; John Edward Dorrill, color bearer; and Amanda Weaver. Other members approved were Emily Howell and Laura Howell.

Winners were named this week in The Star-Herald’s annual coloring contest. Taking first place was Belinda Joy Burchfield; Meredith Oliver, second; Suzanne Barrett, third place. They were awarded cash prizes.
