Readers Celebrate!: Library’s summer reading program ends with a prizes and fun

By Nancy Green

Catch the Reading Bug” became a reality for 360 children who registered for the Attala County Library’s Summer Reading Program.

The program came to a close last week with waterworks day on Tuesday and awards day on Thursday. Of those registered, 180 readers completed reading logs and earned tokens which they used to buy prizes at awards day.

Bicycles donated by Wal-Mart were won by Landon Willhite and Karla Faith Nash. Cade Nabors won the book “The Grouchy Ladybug”; Treasure Rimmer, the Frisbee; Zachary Calhoun, a cup decorated with the reading theme.

Top Easy Reader was Shatibia Lewis who read 202 books. Top Juvenile Reader was Hanna Dallas with 45 books. Nichols T. Jones, Sheliyah T. Jones and Thomas G. Jones Jr. tied for second place Easy Reader.

Throughout the program, youngsters were treated to a variety of events including a puppet show, a storyteller, a magician, a representative from the Museum of Natural Science with live endangered species.

The Mississippi Library Commission with the Kosciusko Rotary Club, Rotary International, and the Mississippi Arts Commission also contributed to the sponsorship of the programs.

Charla Chandler, the library’s Children’s Librarian, coordinated the events.
