July 2, 1959

Work on the grounds for the new million dollar Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital on Highway 12 began about six weeks ago, following the formal ground breaking ceremonies in which members of he Board of Supervisors, selected members of the hospital committee, and city officials participating. On the first floor will be 32,127 square feet of floor space, and on he second floor will be 4,518 square feet, with a total of 36,645 square feet for the entire building.

Names of 76 Attalans will be placed on the election ticket in the Aug. 5 Democratic Primary as qualified candidates for the respective offices they seek, according to members of the Attala County Democratic Executive Committee, with Clarence E. Morgan Jr., serving as chairman.

The Jordan Chevrolet Company of Kosciusko, owned by W. Leslie Jordan, is this week being announced as the new Buick dealer for the area. Buick has not been sold locally since the Rhodes Buick Co. ceased operations early this year. Jordan Chevrolet Co. will be taking in its first new car franchise the company has ever handled since it has been in business other than the Chevrolet.



July 5, 1984

June’s rainfall was the lowest Kosciusko weatherman Ed Reese has recorded during his 24 years of keeping weather records. He recorded .45 inches during the month which was marked with 23 days having temperatures in the 90s. The sparse rainfall was an accumulation over three days. The dry spell was not universal. Some areas of Attala have reported adequate rainfall. Highest temperature for the month was 96 degrees on the 21st and the lowest temperature was 41 degrees on June 1. Reese’s weather report this week indicated a repeat for July. No rainfall was registered at Reese’s listening post for the first four days.

A total of 29 jobs are being eliminated at Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital and three others will be reduced from full-time to part-time as the facility copes with cuts in a key government health care program. The move will reduce total employment at the hospital from the current 164 to 135. Chief of staff, Dr. Jimmy Bailey, said health care will not suffer because of the cuts.

First Presbyterian Church of Kosciusko recently completed construction of a new building and acquired a new pastor. The Rev. James H. Barnes became full-time minister June 10. The first phase of the church’s three-phase building project will be dedicated in the morning worship service July 8.

Mr. and Mrs. Noel Godfrey celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on Sunday. They were honored with a reception given by their children, Misses Carla and Connie Godfrey, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Godfrey and Drew Godfrey. Family and friends gathered in the Family Life Center of the McAdams Baptist Church to extend congratulations and best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Godfrey. – McAdams news by Mrs. L.L. Gowan.

Art work of Kosciusko artist Jack Olson is displayed this month at the Attala County Library. Included in the group are paintings of five extinct Kosciusko landmarks. He has studied art at Renke Academy in New Orleans, also in Memphis and with Marie Hull in Jackson.

Service award ceremonies were held recently in the Newton District office of the Mississippi State Highway Department. Central District Highway Commissioner Sam W. Waggoner, presented awards to employees with five or more year of service. Receiving five-year awards from Attala County were Larry G, Black, Jerry L. Rigby, and Larry L. Black.
