“Our Mississippi Heritage” will be the theme of the program for commencement exercises at Kosciusko High School on May 13 at 8 p.m. at the high school gymnasium. “What it Means to be a Mississippian” will be the basis of an address by Mary Katherine Jordan. Other speaker will be Jeanette Furr, whose topic will be “Our Future as Mississippians.”
Open house will be held at the Ethel High School cafeteria Thursday at 7:30 p.m. by members of the recently organized Ethel Science Club. Fifteen boys compose the club with Mrs. Thomas Rone serving as instructor-leader of the group. Officers of the club are Charles Bond, president; Johnny Adams, secretary; James Clyde Turner, vice president; David Chambers, librarian.
Over 100 persons are directly employed by the eight Kosciusko car dealerships in the Sale-O-Rama which starts Friday. These dealers paid $475,314.07 in wages and salaries and local purchases of supplies in Kosciusko in 1957. They are equivalent to an industry employing 100 people. They are reminding the people of this trade area that “sales mean jobs” – you auto buy now. Highlighting the first day’s events will be a parade of all he new cars from all dealerships, headed up by the prize winning high stepping Kosciusko Whippet Band Friday at 3 p.m.
Mr. and Mrs. James Kirk Godfrey of McCool and French Camp announce the engagement of their daughter, Carol Godfrey of Jackson, to Sgt. Willie Mac Blaine, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Blaine of McCool. The wedding will be solemnized June 7 at 4 p.m. at Bear Creek Baptist Church.
On April 23 at 8 p.m. at Unity Church, Mary Lynda Thornton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elon Thornton of West, became the bride of Franklin Burton Farmer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Halbert Farmer, also of West.
Winners in 4-H District Talent Contest were Cynthia Trimble, 10, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Denton Trimble, Judy Rose Leonard, 11, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Leonard, Margaret Diane Goss, 10, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Noel Goss. The girls did a fast Spanish dance number to the recorded music of “Tequila”. Twenty counties of the district were represented at the contest.

Tracey Tolleson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Tolleson, was named Miss Hospitality at a Thursday night pageant at the Attala County Library. Beth Shaw, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Shaw of Kosciusko was first alternate, and Rebecca Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O.J. Smith of Springdale was second alternate. Other contestants were Cherie Gallaspy, Angela Massey, Jennifer Belk, Karan Alexander, and Marilyn Ashcraft.
Top students at Ethel High School were speakers a graduation exercises held Thursday night. They are Gwen Clark, valedictorian, college preparatory; Troy Goss, valedictorian, general high school; Joey Deason, salutatorian, college preparatory; and Nancy Mims, salutatorian, general high school.
A public meeting has been scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday in the Kosciusko City Hall Board Room to discuss the construction of a museum and information center near the Natchez Trace. The Kosciusko-Attala Chamber of Commerce-IDC will present a proposal to construct the center on property owned by the National Park Service at the junction of Mississippi Highway 35 and the north access leg to the Natchez Trace Parkway.
Mrs. Stanley Hartness assumed her duties last Friday as president of the Mississippi State Medical Association Auxiliary.
Bob Cockroft, owner of Attala Ambulance Service, recently added a new vehicle to his business. The ambulance replaced a 1977 vehicle the company has been using. Both Attala and Sanders Independent Ambulance Service are required to keep one ambulance in service as a condition of a subsidy payment both receive from Kosciusko and Attala County.
Girls Auxiliary members at Kosciusko’s First Baptist Church were honored at a recognition service on May 4. They are Kathy Montgomery, Brandi Hanson, Denise Spradling, Amanda Price, Angela Owen, Elizabeth Weaver, Susan West, Julie Burnham, Rachel Ballard, Amy Bland, Angela Price, Holly Powell, Renee Dorrill, Ginny Eaton, Tamara Simpson, Cassandra Rutledge and Lisa Vanderford.
Sonya Armstrong, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Armstrong, was valedictorian, and Chris Gray, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Gray, was salutatorian of the eighth grade class at Carmack School. They made addresses at the Friday night graduation exercises.
