May 8, 1958

Plans ae being drawn and a contract is scheduled to be let later this year on construction of a new bridge across Big Black River near Goodman on Highway 14, according to Highway Commissioner W.F. Dearman. Dearman said that part of Highway 43 north of Kosciusko toward Shady Grove is being programmed for award of contract in the fall or possibly sooner. A contract for paving of Highway 19 between Zama and Highway 14 has been awarded and a paving contract has also been awarded on Highway 19 between Possumneck and West.

Ethel Boy Scouts to attend the Scout Circus in Jackson Saturday night were Gerald Burchfield, Marion Burchfield, Wayne Dodd, Wayne Adams, Johnny Adams and Dwight Proctor. They took part in the Physical Fitness contest. Mr. and Mrs. Lamar Burchfield, Mr. and Mrs. Billy Mitchell accompanied them.

Sara Duncan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Duncan of Kosciusko, was recently elected editor of the 1958-59 “Miss Delta, student newspaper of Delta State University.

Attala representatives at Girls State selected from Attala high schools by a committee from faculties were four outstanding girls to attend Girls State in Jackson June 6-12. They are Mary Betty Neal, Mary C. White, Sarah Jackson of Kosciusko High School, and Patricia Rainey of McCool.

Mrs. Charles A. Nowell of Kosciusko announces the engagement of her daughter, Martha Faye Nowell, to Joseph Anthony Barranco, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Barranco of Grenada.



May 12, 1983

George Jones and two members of his band came down with the flu this week, but the country singers promoter vows he will play Kosciusko. The illness, however, has delayed a performance that was scheduled for tonight. It was reset for June. Attala county Coliseum manager James Nunn said anyone who purchased tickets for tonight’s performance and desires a refund can get their money back by contacting him.

Distribution of cheese and butter will take place or the fifth time in the area next Thursday. In a four county area, there will be about 20 tons of cheese and eight tons of butter for giveaway to food stamp, Medicaid and unemployment compensation recipients.

Mrs. James Sanders of Center Community, was named “Queen for A day” in a Mother’s Day promotion sponsored by Gibson’s. Prizes included free Sunday dinner at Broken Wheel Restaurant for Mr. and ms. Sanders and their children, Michelle, Jenny, April and Amberly, and a corsage for the honoree from Flowers By Gordon.

Kosciusko police chief Bill Cummins and Municipal Court clerk Marilyn Scott have been elected to offices within their respective associations. Cummins was named a director in the Mississippi Association o chiefs of Police at a recent convention of the organization. In a separate meeting of the clerks’ association, Mrs. Scott was elected president of the group.
