Chief's Corner: The holiday season from a different view

Here are a few tips for the Holiday season.

A burglar or thief shops before Christmas just as we do. However, did you know they shop for easy pickings immediately after Christmas just as many of us do, the difference is that we pay for what we get and they (thieves) just take what we got.

Here is some advice on making it more difficult for a thief to choose your home their shopping place. As you know we all place our boxes or containers that gifts came in, on the road to be picked up by the garbage truck.

Well, a thief will spend as long as it takes to scout and see who got what for Christmas by just looking at your boxes sitting beside the road, that TVs, radios, bicycles, watches and other valuable items came in.

To help deter them from knowing what new items you have, remove any identifying markings from a box or destroy receipts before placing them in the garbage. This includes any credit card receipts, store receipts, canceled checks.

Place yourself in a crooks position, the only way that you can have anything or the only way for you to survive is to steal what someone else has. There are three major considerations that an average crook considers prior to committing a crime, 1. Plan and research a crime that is not complicated, 2. Is the squeeze worth the juice (is the profit worth the effort and the chances of being caught) and 3. How great is the risk of being caught before, during and after the crime.

If we can eliminate or minimize any of the thieves’ considerations or make the effort to commit a crime harder, most likely, only the most desperate crook will attempt the crime. Everyone knows your average crook is lazy, that why they are a crook.

So, protect you and your family’s property and well being by thinking like a lazy crook and making your home a harder target to burglarize.

As a reminder do not leave things of worth in plain view within your vehicle, under your carport or yard. Secure your property by locking your vehicle or home each time you exit it or enter it. Just assume someone is waiting for you to make a mistake so they can buy more dope or just to take what you have so they do not have to work.
